The pearl of Southern Burgenland

Jakobikirche

According to canon law the church consecrated to St. James the Elder is still the parish church of Güssing (Pfarrkirche von Güssing), although the larger monastery church (Klosterkirche) has long since taken over the actual function. Even in the middle of the 18th century there were again and again quarrels between the parishioners and the monastery, so that even regulations had to be issued to regulate the operation of the church (concerning baptisms, marriages, church services etc.). In 1962, under the direction of the then state curator Dr. Schmeller, an exterior renovation was carried out, which is considered a model for renovations. (New type of exterior plaster etc.). 1964 Interior renovation - emphasis on the Romanesque architectural style. The parish (before 1200), which is one of the oldest in the country, is recorded in eight books: from 1690 to 1970 over 7,000 bridal couples, from 1725 to 1970 almost 20,000 funerals, from 1668 to 1970 almost 34,000 baptisms.
